Amos 7-9:15

Amos’ relationship and verbal exchange with Amaziah, the priest at Bethel is very interesting and reminds me of a verse in Jeremiah,

My people are broken--shattered!-- and they put on band-aids, Saying, 'It's not so bad. You'll be just fine.' But things are not 'just fine'! (Jeremiah 6:14 MSG).

Problems can only be addressed by first admitting that there is a problem and then correctly identifying what that problem is. God has given Amos three visions in chapter seven. Two of those visions Amos has no problem interpreting; however, the third, the “plumb line,” God gives him the meaning and he passes the visions and their meanings on to the people. Yet, Amaziah rejects the judgment and calls it rebellious. When does telling the truth become dangerous?

Truth no matter what you do to it, hide it, rebuke it, reject it always stands. You cannot get rid of truth. God is Truth and no matter how hard we try to dismiss Him, we will always fail. Truth that is dismissed by those who are not God’s people I expect because what else would they do? My fear is that I will dismiss Truth because my interpretation of scripture does not fit in with the “Truth” that is being given to me. I fear that those I fellowship with, my church and friends will reject Truth for the same reasons. I desire that God will pull my coat tails when I go off on a tangent away from truth. I’m not as sure as some are that God is on my side.

May we never become so arrogant that we think we know it all and are telling God what to do. We may find ourselves being judged by the great Ancient of Days like Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, and may we remember this exchange between Joshua and the Captain of the Lord’s Army,

When Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up, and behold, a Man stood near him with His drawn sword in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, Are you for us or for our adversaries? And He said, No [neither], but as Prince of the Lord's host have I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, What says my Lord to His servant?
(Joshua 5:13-14 AMP)

Grace and peace,
Ramona
